Out of Places

Sometimes the house just seems to close in on me. I tend to blame it on the small house size, but I don’t know if that is the right place to put the blame.

Lately, I’ve been reminded several times in various ways to have “A place for everything and everything in its place.” Sounds great to me…I just don’t have enough “places”.

I try to organize and ruthlessly clean out…but I’m very good at finding excuses to keep things.

The November newsletter from Above Rubies has stories about families with 8, 9, and 10 children living in miniscule places, travel trailers, foreign lands, etc. They wrote how they choose to be content and even happy with few possessions.

I think I need to work on being even meaner when I clean out.

My idea for December is to make sure I get rid of one or two things every day. That way when Christmas is past and there is a pile of new, exciting things I might have some places for them.

Meanwhile I’ll try to praise the Lord for the cluttered counters that means I have appliances, dishes, and food; the full floor that indicates my children have toys; the laundry loads that prove we have plenty to wear; and the bulging bookshelves that just show my weakness for books of all kinds.

this is something we have to work on regularly with a less than 1000 sq ft house.

Sometimes I do it on my own, sometimes my dh does it with me.

I am constantly purging clothes, toys, baby gear (when I had babies), books - you name it! If we’re not using it or there’s no room for it - it needs to go.

We even gave up the antique rocking chair my inlaws gave us for our wedding. It was a low to the ground sewing rocker (no arms) and even though it was beautiful - after moving it from corner to corner to the basement, we returned it to mil (she’s the type that understands such a return). We just don’t have space for things that are not being used.

The upside - sometimes you can justify a new/used purchase knowing that if you get rid of such and such - there’ll be space.

    Jendi,
I moved from a Texas home that had a place for everything (wonderful closet space) to a Michigan home that, while not tiny, doesn’t allow for everything to have a place. I am constantly trying to purge clutter. The clutter usually wins. I think that while I work on decluttering I will take your attitude. I am blessed to be able to have what I do. Good one!
