One of my nephews is going to boot camp Monday and his parents sent this to me through e-mail.
Watch the movie here about using a sign to say thank you to a person serving our country.
Don’t worry about turning on your sound. It just plays slightly nasty music.
Let me know what you think. Good idea? Bad idea? Would you do it?
Do you say/have you said ”thank you” to military personnel that you meet in a public place? Could you tell us what the military people think of this?

I think it’s a great idea. Simple and effective, although I’d just as soon say it out loud. We ran into an officer in camouflage on a road trip last year and Ethan was so excited to see him. I had him run over and introduce himself and I let the man know that Ethan was eager to meet a soldier. He told us that he was on leave for the holidays. Ethan shook his hand, and we thanked him. Perhaps it was a bit awkward for him, though he didn’t really show it, but I always think that it’s important to thank people that serve us - pastors, teachers, soldiers - and to teach our children to be aware and thankful for all that they do.

I’m not sure how people currently in uniform feel about it, but I know it means alot to the veterans. Ex. This past summer I went into D.C. with my best friend down here and while we were walking through the WWII memorial I noticed an elderly veteran and his wife walking through as well. I told my friend, Gabz, that I really wanted to go tell him thank you. When she told me that she would go with me, I quickly followed the man and his wife. It took us a few seconds to get his attention, but when we finally did, I told him thank you and Jendi, the man and his wife got all teary eyed and thanked Me. I think the veterans must feel forgotten. Gabz and I walked away from that couple and told each other that we would be sure to thank as many veterans as we could for the rest of our lives. So, I agree with Alicia (and not just because she’s my older sis). It is a great idea.

I try to thank military personnel, and vets, if I can. I have had great responses all around. I even thank mothers who tell me their sons are on foreign soil.

I don’t know what I think. I feel it is great to say thank you to the men and women protecting our country but why can’t we just walk up to them and SAY thank you. I think it would mean a whole lot more to them - it takes more effort to actually say the words and means we REALLY care. And where do they get that sign anyway does anyone know?? My uncle was deaf and I know enough sign language to know that Thank you starts with your hand on your mouth then bring it down!!! Unless they changed it. Just curious?
