One week ago we went as a family and bought a new bunk bed. This is the first time that we ever bought a new bed! The others, even the crib, were from yard sales or hand me downs.
Our 3 year old is very excited because she gets the top bunk.
Our 21 month old is excited because everybody else is.
They had great fun helping Daddy. In fact, Daddy had so much help that he wasn’t able to get the beds put together that first night. Two nights later they were ready for their maiden voyage “on a river of crystal light, Into a sea of dew.”
The first night and first nap were no problem. The 21 month old was worn out, stayed in bed, and slept well.
The following nights have been rougher as she’s figured out that she can get out of bed all by herself.
- She’s only fallen out once, and she stayed asleep on the pillow on the floor.
- Her Daddy and Mommy aren’t real happy when she decides to get up at 5:15am.
- It’s been a reminder why Mommy likes to go right from the crib to a twin size bed. Mommy can sleep on it too.
It’s always rough at first when my children start sleeping in a big bed, but the transition is worthwhile and necessary. I can’t help but wonder about the many more transitions I’ll have to go through with my children.

I understand completely. My three year old currently likes to fall asleep anywhere but her bed. She sleeps(figurtively) in a small bed that my uncle built for me when I was little. It is a regular bed but a crib size mattress fits it- hence I do not. I get the floor if I want her to go to sleep in it. The problem lies with the fact that she generally falls asleep right around dinner time for a couple of hours and then wants to stay up all night. We try and keep her from “napping” but we don’t always catch it.

Yay to the new stage of life! (and lack of sleep!)
We’re on the same voyage. Although my Gracie has fallen out of the toddler bed countless times in just a few weeks! She’s just finally starting to learn to not wake up so early. And she’s doing well with going back to bed and staying in there until Mommy gets her out.
Hope your sweetie picks it up soon!
