A fact about breathing that I read somewhere and can’t remember where now…

If you are touching another person for about 20 seconds your breathing will be synchronized with that person.

I remember this because I tested it with several people. I didn’t tell them I was testing it. It doesn’t have to even be a big touch, like holding hands; it can be shoulders touching. It won’t work with feet if you have shoes on.

I can’t find anything online about it. So if you want to think I’m nuts that’s quite all right. Just keep reading my blog.

If I purposely thought about it and tried to not breathe at the same time as the other person, I didn’t. I stayed breathing on my own schedule.

Sometimes my breathing would go to their rhythm and sometimes they would breathe my rhythm. Of course I breathe in rhythm, don’t you?

It worked with my husband whether he was awake or asleep. Sometimes I would see if I could make him breathe the same as me by purposely breathing steadily faster or slower. This was before kids. I have a life now.breathing

After I had my babies I would try to use this trick [I use that term lightly.] to calm them down when I was rocking them. I would purposely slow my breathing down. Anything to calm them and put them to sleep!

So now you know that I think too much and practice synchronized breathing. It’s a lot easier than synchronized swimming!

Would you let me know if you’ve tried it?  Thanks!

LOL! That really cracked me up, but yes… I noticed that as a kid and was intrigued by it for years. I never thought of using it to calm my babies.

Thanks for the link. It looks like TONS of fun!!!

Hmmm… I’m going to have to give this a try, LOL! Caleb’s still not walking on his own, so I don’t really have a life yet. :P And, I like learning new pointless useless interesting facts! Quite a few of my friends here tease me that I am the Queen of Little Known Factoids, LOL! (good thing we don’t live in the same town, or I’d be in for some competition ;) hahaha)

I’ve tried this when I’ve suffered from insomnia due to stress. Listening to Husband’s slow sleeping breathing, matching it if I can, slows down my pulse rate and relaxes me enough to rest, if not sleep.
