Loved your duck family pictures! My husband and I recently saw a mother duck with her brood following behind step off the curb and most of the babies fell deep down into a storm drain. It was so upsetting because the mother wouldn't leave them and she and the babies were very upset. Fire department to the rescue - they came promptly when called and fished the babies out of the drain with a net! The little family continued on it's way as if nothing had gone astray during their afternoon exercise! ...Kathy

What a funny story! I'm glad they got smarter too! We had quail in our backyard once. Momma made her nest under an overturned plastic pot that was up against a fence. Scared hubby half to death when he hit the pot with the weed whacker and out she came after him. We made sure not to disturb the pot after that, and enjoyed all the babies running through our rasberry canes. Now we had a dog, so they no longer visit the back, but occasionally visit the front yard. They are so cute!

Cute! We had a (wild) quail family in our yard one year, and the babies kept falling into our concrete blocks (that we used to terrace our veggie garden). Momma quail is calling from the potentilla shrub, but the babies can't get out (they are the size of a golf ball) . Eventually my daughter and I lifted them out and put them by the shrub, wearing gloves, so I hope they were all ok.
