It started out innocently enough with one. One squirt bottle for me to use while ironing.
Then our cat started getting frisky in the mornings. She would tangle herself around the kids legs, nip at them, and even jump up to get at my daughters hair.
To my husband and I it was no big deal. To our preschool children is was downright scary to wake up, start to run to the bathroom, and get ambushed by our cat.
The unhappy result was that everyone would be awake as soon as one child got up.
So, I got my squirt bottle, set it in an accessible place, and let my 3 children know that they were welcome to use it to ward off the cat in the mornings.
It didn’t work. The squirt bottle scared the cat away, but whichever child took it to the bathroom first never returned with the squirt bottle. So the other 2 children would cry, and not get out of bed.
Have I mentioned that I hate getting up before I have to?
On our next trip to the Dollar Store I bought 2 more squirt bottles.
That solved one problem, but created about 10 other problems.
Now at bedtime we have a grand hunt for the squirt bottles because you know how good preschoolers are at putting things back. If we as parents forget, it gives them such a good excuse to get out of bed. Our bedtime routine is getting longer…
The kids use them like their personal water bottles and suck the drink out of the top. Yuck I know, but I’m picking my battles. At least the water is clean, and I don’t have to take a cup in to them.
Poor cat knows to stay out of sight in the morning because now she gets blasted if she’s anywhere within 5 feet of a child.
