Little Pink Skirt, How I Loved Thee

When I was seven years old my Mom made me a pink skirt that I loved, but she had to change the design when I stained it.

My pink skirt was corduroy, brand new for me, and nobody else had one like it.  The most exciting thing was that it was straighter than my other skirts.  A straight skirt was more like an older girl’s skirt.  More like my older sisters.  Big stuff.

I proudly wore it to church.

One of the earliest times I wore it we had communion.

I spilled the dark purple grape juice on my new pink skirt.  Right in the front.

I. was. devastated.  I hung around downstairs after church so not too many people would see and slunk out to the car quickly when it was time to go home.

Someone made the comment “At least you didn’t spill it on the carpet,” but that didn’t make me feel better.  Who cared about the carpet?  My new skirt had an ugly purple stain right in the front.

My mom got as much of the stain out as she could.  Then she sewed a ruffle around the bottom to hide the rest of the stain.

I never loved it as much after that, and I always wondered if people remembered why it had a ruffle.

There I am in June, with front teeth again.  It was demoted to a play skirt by that time.

That was the only time in my life I have ever spilled the grape juice, and I still think of it every time I take communion.

How ’bout you?  Did you ever spill the grape juice during communion?

It must have been very special if you wore it on Christmas! I always saved my favorites for holidays, too. :)

I once bumped my brother and spilled his grape juice on his jacket…he wasn’t happy with me. And every single time the tray of little cups is passed in front of me, I imagine the whole thing spilling because I was clumsy, in the middle of the solemn service. And I use extreme caution when handling it. :)

Actually that was my birthday – still special. I was nervous just this month because my 2yo was in communion with me. She asked if I would share with her.

I haven’t spilled communion juice. But, that may have something to do with the fact that I wasn’t allowed to take communion until I was around 12 or so.
I feel your pain. I do like the ruffle though, but isn’t it funny how somethings were just so HUGE when you were little? I had moments like that too. :)

So true – some things were HUGE! I seem to be blessed/cursed with a good memory including many of those things-only-I-thought-were-huge.

I’ve never spilled juice on me during Lord’s Supper, but just about any other time I’ve dropped stuff all over my outfits. I jokingly say I need a drop cloth instead of a napkin:).

I’ve tagged you over at my blog… hope you can join in!

Thanks for thinking of me Anne, but I don’t think I can do that tag fairly.
For the messy stuff maybe you could use a fancy cloth like they use in hair salons. :)

I don’t think I have spilled it, but I am such a clutz that I am terrified some day I will! I make sure to totally focus on the tray and hold it with both hands as it is passed to me.

I always make sure someone else is also holding the tray while I get a cup for me.
