Short Term versus Long Term

I’m not talking money investments.  I’m talking about children.

Lately I’ve been asking myself this question, “Is this short term action worth it for the long term result I want?”

I know how I want my children to turn out, how I want them to be and act as adults.

Woman Thinking Pictures, Images and PhotosDoes giving them this thing they want contribute to a good end result?

Is plopping them in front of a DVD for short term relief helping me or hindering me in the long run?  [I'm thinking of moderation and quality more than totally doing away with - because I'm weak.]

Is giving in on something [because they won't stop asking] worth it in the long run, or do I just need to dig in my heels some more?

Why can’t it all be as cut and dry as food?  ”Drink your milk.  It makes your bones strong.  Eat your broccoli it’s good for you.  Only 2 pieces of candy…” etc.

I know there is no cut and dry answer.  I’m just sharing some of my recent thought process.

I’m trying to remember the forest and not just focus on the trees that are in my face every day.

What do you think?

You’ve brought up some good points. I need to think like this more than I do. So often, it’s just about surviving through the right now. :)

I have been thinking some of the same things lately. What are my kids watching me do and what am I teaching them for life with the things I do and let them do!! Thanks for sharing!

I have NO idea! My son is 10 months old and now is becomming a little person.. and these choices confront me daily. I never know if what I do is the right thing.

I think this is definitely something with which we all struggle… finding the right balance and keeping the right priorities can be very difficult sometimes.

I would recommend the Growing Godly Tomatoes website; there is a lot of great info and practical application there. I’m still working on some of the things myself — it’s a learning process, for sure! :o )

  6. I am a sucker & I tend to give in (a lot!). I think it has to do with being too tired or too busy to have the battles everyday. I know me & my husband have to do a better job of not giving in too much–but it hasn’t happened yet!
