We bought some live geese by the pound last week. Our goose, Gus, lost his mate over a year ago. Last spring he hung around where we park and walk. We had to constantly watch where we were walking – know what I mean? This spring my husband decided to do something about it.
The farmer’s market that is about 30 minutes away from us has a produce/plant auction and a small animal auction. Lots of chickens and rabbits! My husband found the white Pekin geese that we wanted by listening for their unique honk. The Lord provided one gander and two geese just like we hoped for!
Here’s a video to make a long story short:
So far they are doing well. We are hoping they will nest and raise some goslings so we won’t end up with any more lonely geese. If they don’t…well…they were cheaper than ground burger.
Did you like auctions? What did you get from an auction?

Cheaper than hamburger?
How cute. I went to an auction just once. My sister stood out in the broiling sun with me, on a Sunday afternoon while I stood there, too scared to bid on anything. What were they saying? Would I accidentally end up with more than one item and pay too much? I was so confused. In the end, I bought a used microwave for $20. Not a steal by any means, but I was determined to buy something. Just to actually do it.

Good for you! For a first timer it really helps to go with someone who is comfortable with auctions.
The local livestock auction is dangerous for our bank account especially if anything cute is in the sales ring.
We’ve purchased ducks, geese, chicks, chickens, and calves. My BIL bought a mule once and a bunch of goats. Our ducks were fun – they were really little and spent the first month or so in our bathtub (not recommended, by the way!). I think 2 of the 4 ducks are still on the farm 4 years later. We had African(?) geese but had to get rid of them. They got really mean when mating season came around. Guess they were defensive of their nests.

I had a feeling you would be familiar with auctions.
Hope he didn’t have to by the mule by the pound. LOL
Aww, my kids would love them too!

this is dave in calif. retired animal person…. i bought 7 white chineese to train a border collie pup i recently purchesed. don’t worry, the geese are not harmed… the entire idea of using a dog to move live stock is to get the job done with the least excitment….. excitment causes weight loss,,, not good.
anyway, the geese are great, and i’m a little taken back by the stories of ninja killer geese,,,, im as cowardly as they come , but i’m not backing down form some goose that thinks hes tough….just grab em by the neck,,,
that fixes their wagon.
