View Nature and Help Your Brain

I read in a magazine that looking at nature helps your brain relax and can improve the thinking process.  Of course, now I can’t remember which magazine.  I guess I remember the bit I read because I agree with it.  This is where I sit:

outside swingI greatly enjoy resting while reading or listening to some podcasts.  My children like to pile on with me [if I let them], and the puppy likes to lay underneath.  This is the view from the swing:

Many times I can feel my stress/tension easing – much like when I work in my garden.  Guess God knew what He was doing when He created this world.  Plus I love all the green!

Here are some online articles I found that talk about nature improving the brain.  Don’t just take their word for it – try it yourself!

I love that swing… I had the privilege to sit and enjoy the outside today and it was definitely what I needed after the crazy morning we had!! The kids ran thru their sprinkler and I took pictures of them and just enjoyed my view!! It is the most relaxing thing I have ever done but I did not realize it did anything to my brain!! hahaha Thanks for sharing and I love the picture…Miss you guys!

Love the view! It really is the most refreshing thing to just be outside on a busy, overwhelming day. If it gets really bad at work, my boss and I will occasionally go for a walk around the outside of our building to relieve the tension of sitting at a desk all day.

Totally true! I notice the difference from when I am able to rest outside and when I rest inside. I think this is why I want to live on acreage and be surrounded by nature and not neighborhoods. (Houses, streets, cars etc.)

even if it doesn’t help the brain, it certainly is good for the soul!

    5. I couldn’t agree more! Nature has a way of calming the soul, bringing us back in tune with our Creator.

I believe it! At our old house in Pgh, we made our tiny backyard into an outdoor refuge with some small ponds, waterfalls, lots of various perennials. aaahhh. Just the sound of the trickling of the water put me at ease. No wonder my husband can’t wait to move back to the country =)
oh, and nat just asked for a hammock the other day =)

I totally agree – one of my favorite wall hangings is a framed puzzle of a pond and foliage that I put together while grieving a baby lost in pregnancy. It just soothes me to look at it every time. And it’s not even “real” nature. But an imitation of what God made for us.

    8. I wish I had some nature I could see from my house! We live in a townhouse neighborhood, so there’s some grass, but not much else. I have to be intentional to be in nature, and I miss my house growing up, where we had tons of woods and a creek in our backyard.

    9. Thanks so much for sharing a post I wrote about the ways nature impacts the human brain and in turn our lives. Nature has nurtured me over the years. I, too, feel God’s touch though nature.

Right now I’d love to sit in that lawn chair and read a good book!
