I Actually Said “E-e-e-k!”

thunder smlYesterday I actually said “e-e-e-k!”

The occasion that resulted in the eek was our dog spitting a dead mouse out at my feet.  I’m used to our cat bringing home dead mice and moles.  She’s a good mouser and I grit my teeth and praise her without any eeks.  When we had our other dogs we lived in town; the most they brought in was mud, sticks, and an occasional piece of litter.

This dog, Thunder, found a dead animal to roll in the first week we had him. Recently he brought the vertebrae of a dead animal to my swing.  After we got that away from him he brought us the jawbone.  You want a good diet?  Dead animal bones are good appetite killers.

My husband wanted to know, “Where is he getting these bones?”  Our son took it as a mission, and sure enough, he located them.
“Mommy, I found where he’s getting the bones!  Come and see.”
“Not right now.”
“When can you come Mommy?  There’s a whole bunch of bones.”
“Thank you dear, but I really don’t want to see the bones.”
“Why?”
“I don’t like to see dead animal bones.  Just tell your Daddy, ‘kay?”  Daddy’s verdict was that a wounded groundhog died in the weeds.

I just realized that I should have warned you to not read this post while eating. Bit late now.

That brings us to yesterday.  My girls ran in the house shouting, “Thunder has a mouse!”  Oh great, I thought, here we go again.  We think he picks up the mice after the cat has brought them to our doorstop, but we’re not entirely sure he’s not catching them himself.  I started toward the outside door just as he ran to me.  Out came the mouse and e-e-e-k went I.  I just couldn’t get myself to praise him.  I was praising the Lord that it was dead.  I’d really be screaming if it were a live mouse.

Now, if he were civilized like our cat he would just drop it and proudly walk away.  Then I could put it on the dustpan and throw it in the weeds.  But no, he wants to chew on it and bound around with it.  So I put the dustpan over it and the girls held it down until Daddy came to the rescue.

The good news is that there hasn’t been any mice in the garage for a long time.

We went thru that with Princess….she kept bringing pieces of ..well, we weren’t sure.. up on the deck. We took one and she would come back with another. Finally hubby went looking for where the pieces were coming from(she is tied up when out side so can only go so far). What he found was a dead rabbit!! We think she killed it, but I am thankful that there has not been any more!! Yuck!!!

Uhhmmm….? Good Dog? My kids want a dog but so far we’ve held them off. I love other peoples pets. I’m just not sure I want my own. Maybe if we can get some property, then the dog can be a “working” dog. At least the chickens I want won’t be dropping dead mice at my feet.
