My oldest daughter, who just turned 5, painted the following picture.  She’s my most creative and musical child.

Awesome painting. I’ve learned it’s okay to let them be messy. It was a hard lesson learned, but I finally allow play clothes to be used to the fullest. :)

We just cleaned up after a painting session. I have learned that it is much easier when I take a couple minutes before to cover the table and put them in painting shirts. Then my panic level is reduced and we can have fun!

I did cover the table the next time and it was so-o much easier. Now I have to work on the painting clothes. :)

Someone just suggested that I spread shaving cream on the table and let them draw in it…I didn’t but I think I might next time I am looking for something for them to do!!! I will have to bite my tongue and let them go!!! :-)

Q: Why do I feel like a better mom when I let them be messy?

A: Because you haven’t forgotten the joy of creating art for the sheer pleasure and you DID forget – if just for one wild moment – that you will have one heck of a mess to clean up. The true beauty of it is that the art will last, the smiles are irreplaceable and the cleanup will be long forgotten before the next mud tracks appear in the kitchen.

    Love your work, Jendi!!!
