I Remember 9-11

Today we have off school for Patriot Day.  That meant a little bit of teaching so my children would understand what the day is about.  I found tears welling up in my eyes as I showed them video footage and tried to explain what happened.

My 5 year old daughter immediately asked if there were children and babies in those buildings, and why were the people screaming?  Her next question was, “Are they going to come get us?”  I was able to say no.

Many military personnel have sacrificed a lot to give me the ability to say “No, they won’t come get you.”  My sincere thanks to the military and their families.

This picture from Nasa’s International Space Station was taken on 9/11/01 right over New York City.

Thanks for sharing… My boys saw video of it yesterday as someone was advertising what they were going to talk about today and they had many questions. I found myself at first stunned again as I saw it unfold on my screen all over again! Then, as you said, I was thankful that there are people sacrificing to keep that from happening again on our shores!!! We just had a friend come home from Iraq and were able to be there when he got off the bus – it was such a blessing to welcome 2 bus loads of soldiers back and show our support!! Then as I gathered my thoughts I tried my best to answer my boys questions! It is nice to see them want to learn and remembering later the things I have taught them. (a little off topic) Standing still for the national anthem is a BIG thing for me and I have really explained it to them and last night at the start of the football game both boys in the living room eating a snack stopped and put their hands on their hearts!! How blessed we are to live in the great country..America the Beautiful!!

It’s still so heartbreaking! I hope we never get immune to the agony we felt that day. My older kids still remember, but I need to let the younger ones see what happened on that day.

Thanks for your sweet words to military families. My brother in law just came home from Iraq and several of my students have served. They all share stories of how necessary they felt their work is. It’s nice to know there are people like you, remembering and honoring the people that keep us safe.

That’s the truth. I wish I would have read this post on the actual day. It’s just as nice though, to keep the day in thought, and the sacrifices still being made to make sure that nothing like this happens again.
