Once again I read book number two without reading book number one. Something I never would have done in high school! A Prisoner of Versailles by Golden Keyes Parsons is an intense book set during the start of a turbulent time in history. I understood what had happened previously and was not confused, but once again the book didn’t totally end. It is waiting for a sequel. There is so much that could still go wrong – or go well – only Mrs Parsons knows. I’ll be keeping my eye out for the next one in this Darkness to Light series.
The main heroine, Madeleine, is a Hugenot with ties to Versailles and the court of King Louis XIV. He is definitely anti-Hugenot. She has already fled Versailles twice. Can she make it out again? The character of Madeleine is real; I felt like it could be part of a biography. I feared for her and felt for her as she fought physical and spiritual battles.
There are several main heroes: Francois has a short, but poignant part. Pierre is a vibrant and needed part of the story. Robert’s character became stronger as the story went on. Commander Bovee’s part is brief and traumatic. Philippe is young and I’m sure we’ll read more of him in the next book.
