Turn Off The Music!

Does anyone else think that the music in the background of electronic games is annoying?  I’ve heard that if you are playing you don’t notice the music, but that’s not true for me.  I go to options and turn off the music on the rare occasions I play a game.

What brought this on?  We gave our children Game boys for Christmas and the music drives me crazy!  They are not allowed to have the volume above half, and they look at me in bewilderment when I say that sound is not necessary to play the game.

I think the main thing that annoys me is that it is the same thing over and over, and over and over, and over and over, and over and over, ad nauseum.  It’s not like a beautiful song with a beginning, middle, and end.  The music generally plays about 4 bars over and over, and over and over – you get the picture.  It’s a good thing I’ve limited their playing time.

So ‘fess up.  Do you let the music play while you get engrossed in the game?

  1. YES! YES! This drives me absolutely insane!! It’s the same repetitive ding-ding-blah-bong over and over until it feels like someone’s drilling for oil inside my ears.

The absolute best investment I ever made was a pair of cheap headphones to plug into that awful noisebox. Now they can listen to their incessant music to their hearts’ content and I don’t have to hear a note of it. Bliss!

  2. Ok, I so agree with you! I hate listening to that music play over and over and over again. I turn the sound off when I play. I even got my 6yr old headphones to use with her leapster since she needs the sound but it annoys me!! :-)

  3. I usually leave it one in my games because I seem to do better with the “countdown clock” type effects being audible. My kids games don’t usually have too much annoying music, though sometimes I think I’ve heard enough of the Zelda sountrack. It’s usually the Star Wars blasters and background “chattering” that ocassionally get on my nerves.

  4. My son loves the Legend of Zelda series of games, but they actually have a soundtrack. Yes, some of the simpler games (such as puzzle games or older arcade games) do have annoying repetitive songs (if you can even call them songs). But other games, like Legend of Zelda and Icewind Dale have sweeping, beautiful music.
Ha ha. As I’m writing this, I’m hearing the little jingle (sort of a “ta-da!”) coming from my son’s room for when Link finds a new item. Wow – that was the third one, he must be on a roll.

  5. I’m so used to it, I tune it out! Lol!
My 12 yo son has a PSP, My 10 yo daughter has a Nintendo DS and the baby has every Fisher Price, V Tech and Leap Frog noise maker you can think of.

    Jendi,
I emailed you. Also, Happy New Year!

  6. I HATE the sound of games that I play, but I have to admit that the music from Joseph’s Call of Duty is actually pretty cool. Sound effects are different, but even then, I tend to turn the sound either off or waaaaaay down.

  7. I hate that music too. I also mute commercials. When my husband asked me why I said, “Because I have enough , and if I want to go but something I know where to find it.”
Also, if you don’t like sounds like that chances are that you are an auditory or kinesthetic learner. That’s why it is distracting to you. :)
