Wednesday night was the first night I did dishes in 10 days! Believe me, I didn’t miss it one bit. Last week my husband and I had a taste of each other’s normal roles. A small taste, but it helped us understand each other a little better.
For 3 days I was the one getting up and leaving while he was the one staying with the kids. After day two he said that he would go crazy if he was a full time stay at home dad. I came home around supper time worn out and with a really bad headache 2 days. Since he was already familiar with the condo kitchen he handled the food needs, and I would help with baths and bedtime – just the opposite of what we normally do.
Of course I had to point out to him that he didn’t have to do any cleaning, didn’t have to homeschool, had the use of a dishwasher, and 2 bathrooms! To be fair I mentioned that I was not working near as hard as he has to everyday; plus I was in a cushy hotel, not a dirty engine house.
He also mentioned that the kids were forgetting my name. I secretly delighted in the fact that they were quicker to call, “Daddy!” for a couple days.
Now that we’re back to our normal it’s good to remember how it felt when we had a small taste of what our spouse does every day – and it wasn’t nearly as disastrous as when Lucy and Desi tried to switch roles.
