The question the post office asks reminded me of the question the airlines ask. The airlines ask if anyone put something in your luggage without you knowing. Umm… if they did it without my knowing…
The post office asks, “Does your package contain anything liquid, perishable, fragile or potentially hazardous?”
Like a terrorist is going to say, “Yes, I’m mailing a bomb because I couldn’t get any anthrax.” Or, “I’m mailing an explosive device. If you listen carefully you can hear it ticking.”
I get that they want to make sure there is no liquid that will spill on to other packages. I wouldn’t like to get mail that drips.
I’m sure that there have been people mailing inappropriate things. It just really struck me as funny on Saturday when I mailed some books to Cash4Books.
I’m sure someone in this wide U.S. answered in the affirmative and the clerk was able to save the day. I wonder what the look on their face was when the offender answered in the affirmative. I wonder if the package was in their hands or on the counter.
Does your Post Office faithfully ask you that question?

My sister was mailing a birthday present on behalf of her mom-in-law once and when the postal worker asked her this, she responded, “I don’t know what’s in here, but I doubt it. It’s a child’s birthday present.” Dumb move. They would not mail it because she didn’t know the contents. And because she lives in a small town, she couldn’t count on going back later to a different employee because there was only one. She had to go to a different town to mail it.

My mailman asks every time I take a package and it is word for word every time he says it!! I have had the same thoughts! I do love the airlines question of did anyone put anything in without you knowing… um.. its possible cause I wouldn’t know!! LOL
