Sunday Poem ~ The Dollar and the Cent

2008 U.S. Liberty Silver Dollar proof (face)

A big silver dollar and a little brown cent,
Rolling along together went;
Rolling along the smooth sidewalk,
When the dollar remarked, for dollars can talk:
“You poor little cent, you cheap little mite,
I am bigger and twice as bright.
I’m worth more than you a hundredfold.
And written on me in letters bold
Is a motto drawn from a pious creed
‘In God we trust,’ which all may read.”
“Yes, I know,” said the cent,
“I’m a cheap little mite, and I know
I’m not big, nor good, nor bright,
And yet,” said the cent,
With a meek little sigh,
“You don’t go to church as often as I.”

I am trying to find an old book of Christian poems. One of them is “The Dollar and the Cent” and there are a number of other light hearted poems. I thought it was called Phil Kerr’s Favorite Poems, but I can’t seem to find it under that name. Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.

I just got that very book this morning. It is the title very old no publication date. I got it at a church rummage sale.

I think there is a line missing from your poem. After the line “and written on me in letters bold” should be the line “is a motto drawn from a pious creed”. It completes the rhyme.
