Nightshade by Ronie Kendig

I was first introduced to author Ronie Kendig when I read Dead Reckoning. Nightshade is the first book in her new Discarded Heroes Series. Let me just say that right now I want to read the rest of the series. Is it among my top favorites? No. Is it good? Yes.

I like the military aspect and the secretness [is that a word?] of the black-ops group. I do not care for the heroine, Sydney. In my opinion she acts stupidly many times, especially towards the end! Oy! She is a Christian, but always seems to pray for help after she botches things up instead of acting for wisdom first.

The hero, Max, is a former Navy SEAL. He is wounded, but not physically. One of his new friends gives him a Bible, keeps nudging him to read it, and lives a Godly life as an example. That’s the kind of friends to have!

My favorite characters are probably the missionaries, Jon and Kimber. There is just something about them and their strong faith…

This story surely runs the gamut of emotions. It’s intense and fast moving. The author gave me enough information to be content, but left plenty of mystery for the rest of the series.

Here is the backcover copy:

After a tour of duty in a war-torn country, embattled former Navy SEAL Max Jacobs finds himself discarded and alienated from those he loves as he struggles with war-related PTSD. His wife, Sydney, files a restraining order against him and a petition for divorce. Max is devastated.

Then a mysterious a man appears. He says he’s organizing a group that recycles veterans like Max. It’s a deep-six group known as Nightshade. With the chance to find purpose in life once again, Max is unable to resist the call of duty and signs on.

The team handles everything with precision and lethal skill…until they’re called upon to rescue a missionary family from a rebel-infested jungle and avoid a reporter hunting their identities.

Will Max yield his anger and pride to a force greater than him…love?

You can find more information at the  author’s site. You can read the first chapter at Where the Story Begins. Published by Barbour.

This book was sent to me through Christian Fiction Blog Alliance for the book tour. The words are fully my own and I have no affiliate links in this post.
