Recently I read Numbers chapter 11 when the Israelites ask for meat and the Lord says that He’s going to give the Israelites flesh [meat] for a whole month “until it come out your nostrils, and it be loathsome unto you:” [Reminds me of sometimes when the kids bug and bug and bug and bug and bug....]
What really hit me was what Moses said next, “The people…are six hundred thousand footmen; and thou hast said, ” I will give them flesh, that they may eat a whole month.”
In my thinking Moses should have already realized that the Lord was not happy and just quietly gone about doing his job, but no – Moses continues to say, “Shall the flocks and the herds be slain for them, to suffice them? or shall all the fish of the sea be gathered together for them, to suffice them?”
Now wasn’t Moses at the Red Sea? Didn’t he put the tree in the water to make it sweet? Hasn’t he seen the manna every morning? Why is Moses asking the Lord those questions?
“And the Lord said unto Moses, Is the Lord’s hand waxed short? thou shalt see now whether my word shall come to pass unto thee or not.”
[In mother words that might have sounded like, "Stop back-talking and do what I say."]
The main thought that crossed my mind after all this was, “Is this a clue as to why the Israelites murmured and didn’t trust? Was their leader prone to questioning?”
I see my children pick up on my bad mannerisms so much faster than my good mannerisms. I continue to try to be better and do better, but I’m not perfect. It was a comfort - and a challenge – to know that it happened with Moses too.
