Grit: Good or Bad?

tree on rockWhen I saw the topic for this week’s 5 Minute Friday my mind went in many directions. I decided to go back to basics and look up the Definition of Grit according to Merriam-Webster.com. Here it is:

  1.  a : sand, gravel b : a hard sharp granule (as of sand); also : material (as many abrasives) composed of such granules
  2. any of several sandstones
  3. a : the structure of a stone that adapts it to grinding b : the size of abrasive particles usually expressed as their mesh
  4. firmness of mind or spirit : unyielding courage in the face of hardship or danger
  5. capitalized : a Liberal in Canadian politics
smooth stone heartsNumber 4 grabbed my attention. I had forgotten that definition. Sometimes I have lots of grit to fight the rushing water, but other times…it flows free.

It made me remember that grit is not all bad. Sure it’s a pain to have it in my shoe, and it fills up my vacuum quickly. But on sandpaper it’s quite useful and I love the pretty smooth pebbles we pick up from the beach.
-
My prayer today is that I may know when I should have the grit – be the grit – with firmness of mind; and that I may know when I should let the grit smooth my rough edges.

This post was written for 5 Minute Friday; where we write for five minutes flat. Lisa Jo’s prompt for this week is Grit. Here’s the list of my other 5 Minute Friday posts.
