One bad thing about being around me in real life is that if I read something I’m excited about I talk about it to everyone. And if you’ve been around me lately for any length of time you’ll know that I’ve been reading my friend’s new book: Backyard Farming on an Acre (More or Less) Just ask my in-laws, sister, mother, children, and my husband – for starters. You’ll probably also know that I’m a bit bummed I can’t have goats because my township requires us to own 5 acres of land in order to have goats.
In the book Angela starts by giving ideas for garden & yard layout and soil preparation. Then she covers how to grow many types of food and herbs, but doesn’t stop there. She tells you how to preserve them, craft with them, and even gives recipes of how to eat them! She talks about keeping backyard animals like chickens, rabbits, bees, and goats [that I can’t have!].
I love that I could hear her telling me about it as I read the book. It’s obvious that she has first hand experience with most of the things she writes about – in good ways and mistakes. It’s very down-to-earth [pun intended] and easy to read. I do wish that the pictures would be in color instead of black & white because I know that they would be beautiful!
I love that she gives many levels of gardening and gives ways that we can make a small effort and still help improve our life and save money in our grocery budget. She often includes very budget friendly ideas alongside the option to just go buy the pre-made option.
I’ve made a list of plants I want to try and have ideas for my destitute front flower bed; there’s no reason it can’t be beautiful and useful! I believe this book will help me along my journey to a chemical free life.
