A fact about breathing that I read somewhere and can’t remember where now…
If you are touching another person for about 20 seconds your breathing will be synchronized with that person.
I remember this because I tested it with several people. I didn’t tell them I was testing it. It doesn’t have to even be a big touch, like holding hands; it can be shoulders touching. It won’t work with feet if you have shoes on.
I can’t find anything online about it. So if you want to think I’m nuts that’s quite all right. Just keep reading my blog.
If I purposely thought about it and tried to not breathe at the same time as the other person, I didn’t. I stayed breathing on my own schedule.
Sometimes my breathing would go to their rhythm and sometimes they would breathe my rhythm. Of course I breathe in rhythm, don’t you?
It worked with my husband whether he was awake or asleep. Sometimes I would see if I could make him breathe the same as me by purposely breathing steadily faster or slower. This was before kids. I have a life now.
After I had my babies I would try to use this trick [I use that term lightly.] to calm them down when I was rocking them. I would purposely slow my breathing down. Anything to calm them and put them to sleep!
So now you know that I think too much and practice synchronized breathing. It’s a lot easier than synchronized swimming!
Would you let me know if you’ve tried it? Thanks!
