Garden Glimpse

Thanks for visiting! If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed by the links in the far right sidebar.

This is one of our farm gardens. I know it is much bigger of an area than most people have as a backyard, but having a large area for a garden is one of the many blessings of living in the country. =)

Our main purpose for our garden is to supply our three families (9 people) with fresh produce in the summer and canned/frozen for the winter. Our secondary purpose is to sell produce at the local farmers market.

As I outline what is in each garden row, realize that this can be done on a much smaller scale. Instead of planting a 50 foot row, plant a 5 foot row! =)

Starting on the far left are rows of corn. More than likely these rows will have to be re-planted because we’ve had a lot of rain in the past week and the corn doesn’t show signs of growth. That’s why it looks like rows of dirt!

The first green rows (5 total) are potatoes. Next to the potatoes is cabbage in the back (the blue/green stuff), carrots, and some onions. The lime green patch in the center of the photo is lettuce surrounded by other varieties of lettuce. I’m not sure what the next row is (my mind is drawing a huge blank).

Then there’s a row of onions. Next to the onion row is the bushy row with lots of beets. The last two rows are more onions with half a row of garlic.

I think there’s also peppers somewhere in the rows too.

The branch hanging down in the front of the photo is from an apple tree, and the trees are loaded with apples this year. =)

All total on the farm, not counting our personal garden, we have four gardens. This garden is the largest and contains the most variety. The other gardens are strictly tomatoes, corn, and potatoes.

In future posts I’ll detail how we prepare the gardens, rotate the crops, as well as information about our personal garden.
