We have a new flower bed! My mom brought me about 20 day lily plants and a whole pile of irises. Seriously, I don’t know how many irises there are, but 75 wouldn’t be an exaggeration.

The above photo is the flower bed we made last week to accomodate the lilies and most of the irises. This bed is about 4 ft x12 ft. I’m really curious to see how it looks when everything starts blooming!

If you click on the above picture, you’ll see a larger version and my weird lines will make more sense. (The photo is really two photos put together that didn’t quite match so ignore the weird seam in the center.)

Since the lilies will grow and fill out as time goes by, we were careful to stagger them. We made three rows with the middle row set off center to the other two rows. Setting the center row off center gave us the “v” or the “x” pattern so no matter what angle you look at the garden from, everything appears to be in rows.

In between the lilies in the front and middle rows are clumps of irises (they’re difficult to see, but one clump is inside the circle). Irises are spring bloomers and will finish blooming about the time that the lilies are getting ready to start.

Besides what we put in this flowerbed, I also added about 35 more irises to the original flowerbed too.

Our project for this week, since our weather is unseasonably warm, is to create a 3rd flowerbed at the base of our satellite TV dish. I have some loose lilies - ones that fell off their clumps and we don’t know what color they are - to plant in there, as well as some large clumps of irises that I’ll break up.

I’m so excited for spring to come so I can see the colors!!!! Thanks for the flowers, Mom! =)
