I was interested in changing the acidity in the soil to see if I could change the bloom colors, but it’s necessary to have blooms in order to change the color!
The 3 hydrangeas on the church property did not bloom this year.
I’ve read that they need lots of water, and it was a dry summer.
According to The United States National Arboretum unfavorable weather is usually the reason there are no flowers. Early fall or late spring freezes affect the plants because most bloom on the previous year’s growth.
There is a section on pruning at Hydrangeas Plus. It mentions that they bloom best when a little stressed so don’t fertilize too much.
These weren’t pruned or fertilized so maybe they were over stressed.
They added nice greenery to the gardens even if they didn’t bloom
Do you have any hydrangeas? Did you have any hydrangea flowers?

I’m assuming these are mopheads which seem to be the most neediest of the Hydrangeas. My mopheads bloomed a bit this year but nothing spectacular. However my Limelight which is a paniculata bloomed its’ heart out all summer & the blooms are aging gracefully as we speak.
I will look for a paniculata next time! I think these just didn’t get the care they needed.

I think the most significant problem with hydrangeas not blooming is improper pruning. Most of the mopheads bloom on last year’s wood so if they are pruned in the spring or even late winter (when they usually look their worse and it is hard not to prune them) you will have cut off all the buds for that year.

The shape of these is not too bad so I will just hold off on pruning all together.
