Candles With Mac And Cheese

Two candles leftover from a banquet, not big enough to save for next year but too big to just throw away. A can of Manwich and a box of Kraft macaroni and cheese served on plastic kid plates. Strawberry milk in Tupperware cups. Three kids that want to blow out the candles.

Two phrases that gifted my heart -
“Mommy, this is good.” ”The candles make it feel like a birthday!”

Is It Funny Yet?

I used to think I’d like to publish a book. Not so much anymore. I used to think about trying to be an inspirational writer. Not so much anymore.  I think I’d like to be funny. Maybe it has something to do with being the third child/baby.  I read somewhere online [that makes it so, doesn't it?] that the youngest tends to like to entertain – or something like that. You can tell I’ve done my research on this topic. Continue reading →

Nashville Zoo Slideshow

My husband took the kids to the Nashville zoo while I was at the Blissdom Conference.  They had a great time last year at the zoo, but this year was colder and not as many animals were out. There was less kids so they played more at the playground in the zoo and still had lots to tell me.

Here’s a slideshow of my husband’s pictures I made while I was fooling around with software from muvee.com.

You can find more pictures at the Wordless Wednesday main site and 5 Minutes for Mom.

Book Review: Cowgirl at Heart

There is another McCord Sister Romance available from Christine Lynxwiler.  I enjoyed Cowgirl at Heart more than the previous story titled The Reluctant Cowgirl. In fact the hero and heroine from The Reluctant Cowgirl are included in this book, but I was ready to smack them both up against a wall. Their behavior really irritated me – yes, both of them.  I’m glad that this story focused on different people.

Andrew Stone and Elyse McCord are the main characters in Cowgirl at Heart. Elyse is a big dog-lover, groomer, and trainer. Andrew is a painter and journalist with karate skills. I liked them both. I liked her balance of independence and dependence.  I enjoyed the way he challenged her and protected her. The adoption subplot/fear of her biological father is well written and the resolution is believable. Continue reading →

Liquid, Perishable, Or Potentially Hazardous?

The question the post office asks reminded me of the question the airlines ask.  The airlines ask if anyone put something in your luggage without you knowing.  Umm… if they did it without my knowing…

The post office asks, “Does your package contain anything liquid, perishable, fragile or potentially hazardous?”

Like a terrorist is going to say, “Yes, I’m mailing a bomb because I couldn’t get any anthrax.” Or, “I’m mailing an explosive device.  If you listen carefully you can hear it ticking.”

I get that they want to make sure there is no liquid that will spill on to other packages.  I wouldn’t like to get mail that drips.

I’m sure that there have been people mailing inappropriate things. It just really struck me as funny on Saturday when I mailed some books to Cash4Books.

I’m sure someone in this wide U.S. answered in the affirmative and the clerk was able to save the day.  I wonder what the look on their face was when the offender answered in the affirmative.  I wonder if the package was in their hands or on the counter.

Does your Post Office faithfully ask you that question?

Sunday Poem ~ He Will Never Fail

Wallpaper: galaxy.

Can the sun forget its rising?
Can the stars forget to shine?
Can the moon forget its duty?
Then can God His will resign.

Can the sea forget to roar?
Can the waves cease and be still?
Can the waters stop giving?
Then God can forget His will.

Can the skies above be measured?
Can the foes of God prevail?
Can a man earth’s structure fathom?
Then God’s promises can fail.

Trust Your Instinct As A Mother

I knew something was wrong when my 3 year old didn’t want to eat mac & cheese. I didn’t let her eat anything for supper.

I am glad that she waited until we were done eating before losing her lunch. I’m also very glad that she made it to the toilet. Especially glad because my husband wasn’t home to help clean it up; my stomach was churning enough as it was.

My role became hair holder and back rubber.  She went to bed with a bowl and dry heaved until after midnight. The physical tiredness of staying up doesn’t bother me as much as the emotional. She would cry and say, “I don’t want to do this. I don’t like this.”

She seems much better today and I’m praying the other two avoid it.

Dressed For The Party

I know that I didn’t have to dress fancy for the (in)courage party during Blissdom 10, but I wanted to. In high school there were fancy occasions a couple times a year. Now, not nearly so many.

Fiction Set in 1902 Bridal Veil Oregon

When I read the dedication to Stephen Bly I had a feeling that Love Finds You in Bridal Veil Oregon would be a good book. I personally love the use of dialogue to move the plot along and Stephen Bly does that very well.  Author Miralee Ferrell did a great job of it as well.

At first I wondered if the cast of characters would be confusing because so many people were being introduced, but the story made sense and I recognized names re-mentioned at the end. The characters came alive and made me feel for them.  The heroine, Margaret Garvey, grew in physical and spiritual maturity through the book in a natural and compelling way. The runaways were a great sub-plot woven tightly with the main story.  That part of the ending was a total surprise!

I’d love to read more about Margaret’s friends, Clara and Jenny. Continue reading →

Don’t Mix Oil And Latex Paint

or Lessons I Learned The Hard Way About Paint

or Paint Can Labels Are There For A Reason Other Than Making The Can Look Pretty

My uncle has been in the painting business since before I was even a twinkle in my mother’s eye.  If he ever reads this he’d probably start shaking his head at my stupidity or rolling on the floor laughing.  Come to think of it my dad might do the same thing.  Oh well.  I’m living and learning.

white paper against lavender wall

It started when all 5 of us went to Lowe’s. I decided to check the mismatch paints because the decorating itch had struck again.  There was a $2.00 quart of pretty pink paint. “Can I get this to brighten up the girls room?” My husband, being a smarter painter than I, checked the label.  ”It’s oil-based so you’ll have to be careful.” [He was remembering the time I used oil based without knowing it, got a little bit on his DSLR, and tried to wash my hands with water. It was a mess, but I managed to blame it all on him.] “Okay, there’s some mineral spirits left that I can use.” Continue reading →
