Sunday Quote ~ On Reading The Bible

open Bible

I believe that the one chief reason that I have been kept in happy, useful service is that I have been a lover of Holy Scripture. It has been my habit to read the bible through four times a year; in a prayerful spirit, to apply it to my heart, and practice what I find there. I have been for sixty-nine years a happy man.

Do Things With Charity

Mom and Daughter Reading Last week my Bible reading was the end of I Corinthians.  Verse 14 in Chapter 16 really popped out at me.

“Let all your things be done with charity.”

I knew that I was not doing all my things with charity.  You know what I thought of first? Not my friends, or church, or work.  I thought of my family. My children.  Yes, I love them; but do I love them enough? Do I love them enough to put aside my wants and comfort? I will only have a few years to teach them.  I’ll have the rest of my life to satisfy myself [wow, that sounds awful].

Let me try to put it another way. [Read more...]

Sunday Poem: The Anvil – God’s Word

Beating an Iron Rod on an Anvil Having First Softened the Metal in the Roaring Furnace

Last eve I passed beside a blacksmith’s door,
And heard the anvil ring the vesper chime;
The, looking in, I saw upon the floor
Old hammers, worn with beating years of time.

“How many anvils have you had,” said I,
“To wear and batter all these hammers so?”
“Just one,” said he, and then with twinkling eye,
“The anvil wears the hammers out, you know.”

And so, thought I, the anvil of God’s Word,
For ages skeptic blows have beat upon;
Yet, though the noise of falling blows was heard,
The anvil is unharmed – the hammers gone.

Sunday Poem ~ Psalm 34:1-9

Sparrows, Central Park, NYC by Rudi Von Briel

I will bless the LORD at all times:
his praise shall continually be in my mouth.
My soul shall make her boast in the LORD:
the humble shall hear thereof and be glad.
O magnify the LORD with me,
and let us exalt his name together.
I sought the LORD, and he heard me,
and delivered me from all my fears.
They looked unto him, and were lightened:
and their faces were not ashamed.
This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him,
and saved him out of all his troubles.
The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them that fear him,
and delivereth them.
O taste and see that the LORD is good:
blessed is the man that trusteth in him.
O fear the LORD, ye his saints:
for there is no want to them that fear him.

Sunday Poem ~ What Is Home Without A Bible?

What is home without a Bible?
‘Tis a place where day is night,
For o’er life’s beclouded pathway
Heaven can shed no kindly light.

What is home without a Bible?
‘Tis a place where daily bread
For the body is provided,
But the soul is never fed.

What is home without a Bible?
‘Tis a vessel on the sea,
Compass lost and rudder broken,
Drifting, drifting, aimlessly.

Lost — the Bible! Lost — it’s teachings!
Lost — its help each day in seven:
Lost — to live by! Lost — to die by!
Lost? What’s lost? The way to Heaven.
