Quick – We Need Dessert!

While I was making supper my 4 year old daughter told me, “We need to make some dessert because we are out of candy.”

chocolate pudding pie is yummyI agreed and whipped up a chocolate pudding pie while she was out of the room.

As she was inhaling the pudding pie later she said, “Mommy, did you make this? It’s delicious!”

That’s me.  Gourmet with a box and a pre-made crust.

His First Catering Job

This past weekend my husband and I hosted our church’s annual Sweetheart Banquet.  We knew would have a small group this year and he decided to cook the food to keep the cost down.  I said, “Go for it, honey.  I’ll help, but I’m not doing the main part.”  He said, “No problem.”  He stayed true to his word.

First we figured out the menu:

Fruit Salad
Potato rolls
Ham or Roast Beef
Green Beans or Carrots
Potatoes – Roasted, Spicy, or Cheesy
A variety of Cheese cakes
Angel Food Cake – Sugar Free Topping or Cool Whip
Iced Tea – Water – Fruit Punch – Coffee

Then his mom did all the purchasing of the food.  On the 14th my husband cooked the food, and we took it to the train car where we held the banquet.  In the meantime I planned the games, prizes, and decorations.

I forgot to video the dessert – oops.  Guess I was too eager to eat it.

What food do you like at a banquet?  Do you like to try new things or have familiar things?  Have you ever cooked for a large crowd?

Fried Dough

My in-laws brought fried dough with them from NY.  This area of PA wasn’t familiar with fried dough.

They have lots of stories about making fried dough and leaving dough in the back of a warm car…LOL.

They’ve made it for our church Christmas party for years so I usually get to eat it once a year.

This year I’ll have it twice because my husband’s sister was hungry for it and asked my MIL to make some while she and her family were visiting for Thanksgiving.

I must confess that I wrote this post to torment my husband’s cousin.

Hi J in MN!  I thought of you while I was chewing away.
Don’t hate me too much.   Now you’ll have to make some yourself. :)

God Bless The Inventor of Cold Cereal

Let me just say that if I were required to cook for breakfast my family would be going hungry till lunch.

I know that breakfast is supposed to be the most important meal of the day.  It’s just never been very important to me.

My favorite special breakfast is Pillsbury cinnamon rolls.  My favorite every day breakfast is toast and cocoa.

My 5 1/2 yo son can already make, butter, and jelly his own toast.  The extra 15 minutes in bed is worth cleaning up the mess.

Before we had the kids it was common to see my husband and I eating cake or chocolate chip cookies for breakfast.

Homemade cake or cookies just might be healthier than the Pop-tarts that we eat occasionally.

Fruit is great for breakfast too.  Just this morning we had fruit cups and cashews.

We balance every breakfast by taking our vitamins, [just in case you've gotten the impression I'm lax in the nutrition department], and I make them eat cereal before they have a cupcake.

Sometimes we have day old cinnamon rolls from the grocery store bakery.  Just microwave for about 15 seconds and eat.

Now that’s a good breakfast!

What about you?  Are you a breakfast cook?

Watch Out For Rainy Day Urges

Rainy days bring out my urge to bake. Yesterday the urge went crazy.

The kids and I baked…

  1. Two banana breads.
  2. Two small pumpkin breads [using pumpkin I froze last fall].
  3. Four small pumpkin breads with chocolate chips [but half the chips stuck to the bottom of the pans].
  4. A Chocolate Buttermilk Cake [please excuse my fancy cake plate - a lot of my stuff is packed].
  5. A Hashbrown Hamburger casserole for supper.
  6. One pan of rolls [not really - they just needed thawed].

I’m throwing this next picture in to keep me honest and humble. This was a half hour before the previous picture.

Since the necessary baked goods were in the freezer and the dishes were cleaned up, well half cleaned up…

Just kidding. That picture is totally posed before I rushed around throwing church clothes on everybody, except my husband. He throws his own clothes on.

The casserole has been demolished and it sure was nice to have banana bread for breakfast.

P.S. I got the recipes off the internet because – you know – a lot of my stuff is packed.
