Staying Healthy On The Road Again

By the time you read this we will be cruising along in our Suburban on the way to the Type A Conference. I’ve spent the last couple days crazily trying to get everything ready. [I hope I didn't forget anything.] It was sketchy for a bit that we would be able to afford the trip until I got a sponsor.

We are very grateful that Doug from Fitness Weight Loss Center is sponsoring our trip. Joe and I got to meet him when we went to Baltimore. This is my favorite part of his about page:

I’ve started this Website with the two primary goals – (1) too keep myself immersed in a healthy lifestyle of proper diet, nutrition and regular physical exercise and (2) to help as many others as I can to reach their healthy lifestyle goals through proper diet, nutrition and regular physical exercise.

There is a lot of great information there that makes me think every time I visit his site. He even has info about eating healthy while traveling that I’m going to try to keep in mind. I struggle with that for us and the kids.

Now that I know we can afford a place to sleep and food to eat all I have to worry about is doing good during my presentation on video editing!

If you stop by FitnessWeightLossCenter would you do me a favor and leave a nice comment? Thanks so much!

We Tried Thin Strips and Have 5 to Give Away

I know that my children get better faster if they sleep and eat well, and they need to breathe well to do so.  I used to be really stingy with medicine, but the combination of having children over the age of 4, more noses to wipe, and going more places makes me offer medicine quicker.

That means I have to find the medicine and the little measuring cup.  Then I have to figure out the proper dosage, pour it, and hope they don’t spill the little cup halfway to their mouth.  The other day my daughter drank it too fast and coughed some back up.  That makes me question, “Did she get enough medicine in to help her stop coughing and sleep?”

Triaminic sent me a box of Thin strips just in time.  Have you seen any of their advertisements?  The medicine is individually wrapped with the right dosage.  No little measuring cups needed.  The medicine is  a paper thin strip that kind of melts on the child’s tongue.  My daughter didn’t get it completely on her tongue and it melted on to her teeth, but a drink washed it right down.  It took me longer to open the foil package then it took for her to take the medicine.  Now I know to just snip it open with my scissors.

I was more comfortable sending my children out with other children knowing that they would not be coughing and blowing their nose so much.  Sometimes I do just keep them home because it irritates me when a sick child is out in public spreading their germs around.  I guess it would be rude to print Triaminic’s Free Sick Day Guidelines and hand them out to the other mothers.  Maybe they wouldn’t mind a coupon for Triaminic.

I was brand loyal to other medicines, but I’m glad that I tried Triaminic.  Would you like to try it also?  They have offered 5 boxes of Triaminic Thin Strips, Day Time Cold & Cough Medicine for a giveaway.  Did you get that?  5 of you can have a box of medicine for free!

You Ought To See The Other Gal

I’ve had 3 black & blue eyes in my life time, but not all at once.

Now I know that you who have seen my video think, “What did that cute girl ever do to get a black eye?”

Those of you that know me in real life are probably laughing, or shaking your head, or both.

None of my black eyes were from a fight, and that’s the story I’m sticking with.  No, really they weren’t.

Number one was from gym class softball.

Number two was also from softball.   Somebody hit a drive down the first base line and I was playing first base.

That one I remember because it was the same week as the school play – in which I had a solo to sing.    Makeup was my friend for that performance.

I can’t remember if I managed to get the runner out or not.

Number three was during my senior year in high school.  I got it when my wisdom teeth were removed.

Seriously!  I went under with perfectly clear skin, well perfect in between the black heads; and woke up with a big green shiner.  Guess those teeth didn’t want to come out.

So I’ve never had a broken bone – Praise the Lord – but I’ve had three black eyes.

How ’bout you?  Go ahead – ‘fess up.

Edited to add:  If you want a laugh – or two – read Terri’s comment on this post.

Be Still And Know

This is an excerpt from the Ladies Home Journal, June 2007, article titled Don’t Stress The Small Stuff by Beth Levine.

“I know that each of these irritations by itself is No Big Deal. I know I should be grateful that I am not facing “real” stressors…”"It’s not one big problem that drives us bat crazy, but the constant pick, pick, pick of the little stuff…Nonstop minor stress can have a serious impact on our mental and physical health. According to experts, constant stress (the aggregate of minor day-to-day stresses) packs a bigger wallop on the brain and body than acute stress (experiencing a single stressful even, such as chasing an errant child who’s run in to the street or finding yourself on an elevator in free fall). For the latter kind of emergencies, your body mobilizes its resources, acts and then recovers; when you experience constant niggling stressors, your body drains down the same reserves without ever having a chance to recoup the losses. If that daily stress doesn’t stop, the over load can weaken your immunity, strain your heart, affect your memory and cause depression, anxiety and weight gain, says Bruce S. McEwen, Ph.D,,,at Rockefeller University and author…”

That part of the article rang a bell with me. Sometimes as a mother I start to feel overwhelmed, stressed, and drained. I want to just rest and refresh, but then I feel guilty because my stress seems small compared to so many other people’s problems in the world.

God has told us in the Bible that rest is important. He set the example himself in Genesis 2:1b “…and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.”

It is my experience that it is better for me to take a short break and “recharge my batteries” before going on. To continue tiredly plodding along with the mountain of chores looming over me is worse for me and my family. There will always be dishes, laundry, and dirty floors; and telling myself to be thankful for what I have doesn’t always help – though it is a good thing.

Ps 116:7 Return unto thy rest, O my soul; for the LORD hath dealt bountifully with thee.

The best way to relieve stress and get a better outlook is to read the Bible and pray. I have found that it is better for me to read the Bible early in the day – it puts a better outlook on the whole day. It was not as important for the reading time to be early before I had children.

Ps 4:4 Stand in awe, and sin not: commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be still. Selah.

Other stress relievers that work for me:

  • Exercise – even if it is just a walk around the block.
  • Music – I don’t always feel like singing, but my fingers can make music.
  • Water – I grew up by a creek where I could go and work out problems. Even now, on occasion I will head to the nearest body of water to see the beauty and talk to God.
  • Gardening – yank those weeds!
  • Cleaning – not straightening or organizing, just scrubbing and rubbing. (Non-mental)
  • Personal time – time by myself – even if it is just behind a (locked) bathroom door. Although, if you are potty training and only have one bathroom it doesn’t work as a place for a break. =)

What works for you? Find what God has given you to use as a stress reliever.

Sometimes I just feel drained – like I have nothing left to give. The kids and pressures have been after me all day and I feel like I poured out all I could – I am empty and have nothing. Then it is time to be still.

Ps 46:10 Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.
