This is my wooden soprano recorder; it goes wonderful with children’s voices. I started with a plastic recorder in elementary school [like most everyone, I think], but never fully pursued it. I’ve heard great classical musicians with a recorder – and I can’t play like that. I’ve only taught myself enough to play songs with up to 2 accidentals. I have a wooden alto recorder, but haven’t take the time to become proficient on it.
Sunday Song ~ Jesus Is Coming Again
My piano teacher gave me this music arrangement when I was in high school and I still love it. Lots of small quick movements that are easier for my hands than big octaves. I pull it out periodically and play it for an offertory or prelude.
Dwelling In Beulah Land
I’ve had the privilege of attending the same church from elementary school till present day.
We have sung “Dwelling in Beulah Land” by C. Austin Miles for many years. [Except we don't sing it as slow as the link plays it.]
As a young person I eagerly anticipated the chorus where the church, mostly the men, would shout, “Praise God!” right after the phrase “underneath a cloudless sky.”
The sound would resound through the auditorium and echo through the downstairs.
During the later years of high school and newly married life that shout became quieter during the singing. For a while it was just quietly spoken or left out entirely.
I missed it.
I’m happy to report that the “Praise God!” is back and growing louder. No embarrassment or sheepish smiles. Just exuberant words heard above the music.
Praise God!
Sunday Song ~ I Am With Thee
I walked thru a valley so dark and so low,
The sun did not shine there, but a lily did grow;
I cried to my Fa-ther, “How can this be?”
He said, “Can’t you see, child? I am with thee!”
Chorus:
I am with thee; I am with thee!
Thru the fire, thru the flood
You are covered by the blood;
For I am with thee!
I climbed up the mountain till I reached the top,
And there sprang a fountain in a dry, barren spot;
Again my heart questioned;
My eyes could not see,
Again Jesus whispered, “I am with thee!”
Chorus:
I am with thee; I am with thee!
Thru the fire, thru the flood
You are covered by the blood;
For I am with thee!

Mixed Up Lyrics Made Me Think
Once a month I play the piano in the Alzheimer’s unit of a local nursing home. This past Monday the lady that sat on my right sang almost every song I played. If she didn’t know the words she would hum along. I always enjoy hearing them sing or hum along.
While I was playing the following song she replaced the word “trophies” with “sorrows.”
So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross,
Till my trophies at last I lay down;
I will cling to the old rugged cross,
And exchange it some day for a crown.
It was just an honest mistake. It made me think how glad I will be to not have any sorrows in Heaven.
Then I thought about the fact that I can give my sorrows to the Lord now.
The trickiest part for me is not taking them back after I have given them to Him.
