Romantic Ideas In Marriage

romantic proposalThis week is my 14th wedding anniversary and I’m writing on marriage related topics.

I love romance. If you are a regular reader of this blog you know that I read a lot of romantic fiction. I think that – like most things in life – romance should be balanced. Starve a women of it OR smother a women with it and you will have problems. I also think that some wives too quickly use the lack of it as an excuse, but that’s a post for another time.

As a young teenage girl romance was flowers, chocolates, notes, phone calls, even a 3 cell maglite. One Sunday during our engagement was a Valentine’s Day and I had to work. It was quite a bummer. As I snuck out of church early to leave for work I noticed an extra passenger in the back seat – an adorable stuffed bear. It was a surprise because I had already gotten flowers and chocolate. At the time that was the epitome of romance to me – and I could brag about it to the other girls at work.

Sunday Poem ~ An Act of Love

Tight Rope Act, Stamps by Dave Palmer

And act of love need not be
a gesture great or grand…
A smile can work a miracle
and show you understand.
Being there in time of need
transcends the spoken word;
A helping hand is simply grand
when hearts begin to bleed.

A prayer is nothing till it’s heard
beyond the highest leaf,
But when it’s answered, oh my friend,
how strong is our belief!
An act of love may simply be
a smile, a hug, a kiss…
But it’s a joy for all to see
when troubles come like this.

Sweet Hug

If it’s early in the morning when my girls wake up they come to my side of the bed and I pull them up in.  Thursday my 2 yo came and snuggled with me, cold feet and all.  Guess she doesn’t get everything from her Dad. ;)

After a couple minutes I rolled over and she snuggled against my back.  Then she put her arm around my neck.  I lay there thinking how precious she is.

She looks for me first thing in the morning and last thing at night.  She watches me all day.  She mimics me.  She expects me to have all the answers.  She makes me so happy.  She makes me mad sometimes too.  She trusts me.  She picks me over all others.

Over all – how sweet to be loved by a little child!

Sunday Poem ~ The Tone of Voice

Mother and Child, c.1885 by Francis Coates Jones

It’s not so much what you say
As the manner in which you say it;
It’s not so much the language you use
As the tone in which you convey it;
“Come here!” I sharply said,
And the child cowered and wept.
“Come here,” I said –
He looked and smiled
And straight to my lap he crept.
Words may be mild and fair
And the tone may pierce like a dart;
Words may be soft as the summer air
But the tone may break my heart;
For words come from the mind
Grow by study and art –
But tone leaps from the inner self
Revealing the state of the heart.
Whether you know it or not,
Whether you mean or care,
Gentleness, kindness, love, and hate,
Envy, anger, are there.
Then, would you quarrels avoid
And peace and love rejoice?
Keep anger not only out of your words –
Keep it out of your voice.

Sunday Poem ~ A Christmas Invocation

Love by Maria Girardi

God, come with light this holy night
That we may worship Thee aright.

God, give our world new stars of hope
To light the way in which we grope.

God, grant anew to weak and strong
Sure messages of angels’ song.

Let wise men find the manger still
To bring Thee heart and mind and will.

Move on this world in hearts of men,
That all may find the Christ again,

Not manger-held, nor manger-bound,
But waiting still where love is found.

And oh, dear God, make us aware
Through Christ how great Thy loving care.
