My children have no problem spending money. They are actually quite generous with it; they don’t just buy things for themselves – they offer to buy things for friends, cousins, each other, even me! One of the things I really want to help my children learn is how to manage money in a way that benefits them. Somehow I end up sounding stingy when I say, “Just save your money.”
Two years ago my son saved up all his mowing and birthday money to buy the big toy that he wanted. The way he saved the money was by giving it to Daddy to keep in a safe place. We were able to teach him about tithing [charitable giving] and saving; but not really about managing money.
Living in a digital age actually brings up some problems; especially since I do a lot of my shopping online. Today I set up a profile for my oldest child on VirtualPiggy.com in the hopes of helping with some of those problems.
