Book Review | Finished the Dreamhouse Kings Series

This series is closer to the science fantasy genre. The King’s house has a special upstairs hallway that captures time portals through which they can travel to the future or the past. Problem is, the bad guys can use them also and their archenemy has figured out how to use the portals to his advantage. There’s a couple other factors like not knowing where you will end up and needing items from the antechamber so you get back to the right time.

I’m glad that I get to review Frenzy by Robert Liparulo. It is the last…? in the series of stories about the King family. If you are interested in this series you really do need to start at the beginning. I started at number four, Timescape, and it was hard to figure out what was going on. I still finished the book and signed up to review number five, Whirlwind. By number 6 I knew exactly what was going on and was excited to find out what happened. [Read more...]

Book Review | Whirlwind By Rober Liparulo

Today’s the day to post the review of Whirlwind by Robert Liparulo , but I didn’t receive the book.  I know that I asked for it because I read Timescape, which is number 3 of the series; and I wanted to find out how the boys escaped the bad guy.

Here’s the backcover copy and links for more info:

Which door do you go through to save the world?

David, Xander, and Toria King never know where the mysterious portals in their house will take them: past, present, or future. They have battled gladiators and the German army, dodged soldiers on both sides of the Civil War, and jumped from the sinking Titanic. They’ve also seen the stark future that awaits if they can’t do something to change it–a destroyed city filled with mutant creatures.

And they’ve still got to find a way to bring Mom back and keep Taksidian from getting them out of the house. The dangers are hitting them like a whirlwind . . . but the answers are becoming apparent as well.

Reviewing Timescape

Every so often I like to read a science fiction or fantasy book.  It’s a hang over from having a dad with a large sci-fi collection.  Lately some Christian publishers have been including sci-fi and I’m glad.  I know that it will be morally clean – knowwhatImean?

TimescapeMy latest read was Timescape by Robert Liparulo.  Before the book starts there is a warning page that says, “STOP!  Read the first 3 books before starting this one.”  I thought, “Oh, okay.  I would, but this is for a review and I have a pile to read so I’m just starting with this one.”  About 5 pages in I realized they were totally right.  It took a while to get oriented and just when I was figuring things out  - it ended!  No, it didn’t end – it just stopped.  There is another book coming out.  While I don’t mind authors that continue books I prefer some sort of climax and conclusion before the last page!
