Share the Love Not the Cold

tissuesIt is definitely easier to rest during sickness when you don’t have a child in diapers.  There’s still a lot of ups and downs, ins and outs, but it’s a bit easier.  Don’t you think so?

The problem is that now they want to hug me, lay with me, kiss me, and bring me tissues.  While I appreciate their love I really wish they wouldn’t kiss me.  I’d rather not be blowing their nose all next week.

We Tried Thin Strips and Have 5 to Give Away

I know that my children get better faster if they sleep and eat well, and they need to breathe well to do so.  I used to be really stingy with medicine, but the combination of having children over the age of 4, more noses to wipe, and going more places makes me offer medicine quicker.

That means I have to find the medicine and the little measuring cup.  Then I have to figure out the proper dosage, pour it, and hope they don’t spill the little cup halfway to their mouth.  The other day my daughter drank it too fast and coughed some back up.  That makes me question, “Did she get enough medicine in to help her stop coughing and sleep?”

Triaminic sent me a box of Thin strips just in time.  Have you seen any of their advertisements?  The medicine is individually wrapped with the right dosage.  No little measuring cups needed.  The medicine is  a paper thin strip that kind of melts on the child’s tongue.  My daughter didn’t get it completely on her tongue and it melted on to her teeth, but a drink washed it right down.  It took me longer to open the foil package then it took for her to take the medicine.  Now I know to just snip it open with my scissors.

I was more comfortable sending my children out with other children knowing that they would not be coughing and blowing their nose so much.  Sometimes I do just keep them home because it irritates me when a sick child is out in public spreading their germs around.  I guess it would be rude to print Triaminic’s Free Sick Day Guidelines and hand them out to the other mothers.  Maybe they wouldn’t mind a coupon for Triaminic.

I was brand loyal to other medicines, but I’m glad that I tried Triaminic.  Would you like to try it also?  They have offered 5 boxes of Triaminic Thin Strips, Day Time Cold & Cough Medicine for a giveaway.  Did you get that?  5 of you can have a box of medicine for free!

The Nastiest Virus I Know

Once, my oldest daughter had diarrhea for 10 days!  N-A-S-T-Y!  By the second day it was green and smelled horrible.

That was my introduction to Rotavirus.

She has thrown up when she got the virus, but usually she just gets a fever and diarrhea. The diarrhea was usually green because the food doesn’t stay in her body long enough to let the bacteria turn it brown.

Another unpleasant fact is that the rotavirus diarrhea has a particular smell.  It’s different from “regular” diarrhea and once you smell it you will not forget it.

As a parent it made me feel helpless, sad, and nauseated when it was time to change her diapers.

I think the worst part is that it made her not want to eat.  It’s awful to see your child not eat day after day.

I couldn’t just offer her favorite things to her because the first thing the doctor said was, “Don’t give her any fruits, vegetables, meats, or dairy.”

Ummm.  So what do I feed her?  “Grains, Breads, and lots of clear liquids.”

Liquid yogurt becomes our best friend when rotavirus strikes. Look for a liquid yogurt that has an active bacteria culture.  Yo Baby brand worked good for us.

By 3 years old most children have built up an immunity to rotavirus, but even adults can get it.  Just ask my husband.  He was miserable for about 4 days and lost 10 pounds in 2 days.

Adults can use an over the counter medicine like Immodium for some comfort, but there isn’t anything for children.

In 2005 my doctor’s office got the vaccine Rotateq.  Unfortunately my first daughter was too old, but my second daughter got half of the vaccine.

Why half?  It’s administered in several doses and I didn’t realize that I didn’t get her in soon enough for the last dose.

I believe that the Rotateq helped my second daughter anyways.  Both girls have got the virus at the same time and my younger daughter only gets it half as bad.

This virus can live on hard surfaces for days so be extremely vigilant when changing diapers and giving baths.  We always wash the sick one last and rinse the tub and toys well when she is done.

If you or yours have ever had it I extend my heartfelt sympathies to you.

I’m still fighting the cold/flu virus.  It’s weird how much it affects my ability to think up great posts.  Most would say that I never had that ability in the first place.  I totally agree.

I won’t go into the details, but that virus and I have been battling since Friday.  Sunday was my weakest day, but I rallied my defenses and re-launched my attack.  I’m back to just cold symptoms now.  Still no fun.

Yesterday I was wondering if I should be wearing a doctor’s mask.  Not to protect me, but to protect my kids.  Maybe gloves and a face shield…

“Mommy, I hit my head.  Please make it better.”  Sniffle, sniffle.  I kiss the boo-boo and run for another tissue.

“Would you read me this book?”  “Okay.”  Cough, Hack, Wheeze.  “One day…”  Then run for a tissue and another hand washing.

“What’s for lunch?”  “Here’s your hot dog.”  Aa-choo.  Eyes are watering.  Run for tissue, wash hands, come back, cut food, sniffle, sniffle…

Maybe their immunity is built up because they had it right before me.  I pray it’s so.

P.S. Are you wondering why I was running for tissues?  I’m keeping the sole remaining tissue box in the bathroom so I can wash my hands right away.  If not, the kids will ask for something and I will get sidetracked.

The Cold Didn’t Come Soon Enough

I know that some people liked the warm weather.  While I have to admit it was somewhat pleasant, as my children dragged mud through the house; I could just hear those germs breeding and feel them sneaking up on me.

Sure enough, all three of my children got sick.  Actually 3/4 of the 3-5 year Sunday School Class is sick.  My husband and his/our friend were commiserating on the phone about having a sick one year old.

It’s a whopper of a flu this time.  They all threw up plus the girls had to deal with diarrhea.  Regretfully we even managed to pass it to their grandparents.

Praise the Lord that the weather turned cold again.  Freeze those germs!  Oh yea.

I took advantage of the cold, clear weather and hung the sheets on the line.  [I had what felt like a bazillion loads of laundry to do.]  As I snuck out the back door I deeply inhaled each and every time.  I wanted to make sure that nice cold air got way down in my lungs and wiped out any stuff I breathed in from all those pukey sheets and diapers.

On the good side our grocery bill will be way down this week.

What am I blaming the sickness on?  That warm weather, for sure.
