There is a piece of furniture in our living room area that we call the couch. Did you know that if you look up the definition of couch it says sofa? Answers.com defines sofa as “A long upholstered seat typically with a back and arms.” There is a lot left out of that definition for our sofa!
I think one definition should say “Sofa: n. B. a soft piece of gymnastic equipment for small children. Just the place for practicing head stands, flips, and other tumbling.” I’m sure that some of you are thinking – She should make her children sit on the sofa! Sorry, I remember how much fun can be had on a couch and I choose to let them do flips. No jumping, but flips are okay when nobody is sitting there.
Our couch is a place for activity and a place for cuddling. It’s a place for shouting, “Watch me Mommy!” and a place for quick naps. A place for book reading and a place for singing. A place for family and for solitude.
My husband would probably add this definition for sofa: C. A place to sit that signals your children to pile on top of you.
What is your couch for?
